On Tuesday, April 8, 2008, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revised its regulations on F-1 Optional Practical Training. This rule appeared in the Federal Registers and is available for you to read online.

• A one-time, 17-month OPT extension (for a total of 29 months of OPT) for students who have bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in certain STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,Mathematics) fields.
• H-1B cap-gap extension of duration of status (D/S) and work authorization through October 1.
• Limited periods of unemployment to maintain F-1 status.
• Differentiation between pre-completion, post completion, STEM, and Cap Gap OPT authorizations.
